Melissa Koning

Melissa is so excited to be part of the BCS Teaching Team after taking some time away to be a stay-at-home-mom!

Melissa grew up in Salt Lake City, UT, and graduated from Intermountain Christian School.  All the years of “living at school” because her mom was an elementary teacher must have made a good impression as she decided to head to Dordt University where she received her BA in Elementary Education along with a Reading Endorsement.  She taught for six years in elementary classrooms in four different states as she followed her husband, Brian, through Optometry school, residency, and into his first job in Olympia, WA.  Once their oldest was born, they decided she would stay home.  They moved to Bellingham almost 10 years ago now.  They are so thankful for the beauty of God’s creation that surrounds them, the joy of friendships that the Lord has provided through their church, school, and neighborhood.  They are also so thankful that Melissa’s parents moved here about 2 years ago!!

She loves spending time with her family! She and Brian, along with their four kids, love to spend time outside hiking, biking, kayaking, and going for walks with their 15-year-old Golden Retriever, Matty Sioux.  They also love to sing together and play board games.  They love being part of Hope in Christ Church where they serve on the worship team, help with Sunday school, and serve in other various leadership roles.

While she has absolutely loved volunteering in different ways at school through the years, when she got her feet wet with subbing at BCS, she knew she was ready to get back into teaching if an opportunity arose! She is so excited that the Lord has provided the opportunity to team teach 1st Grade with Rachel Nelson.  She is humbled to partner with her in this educational setting!  They look forward to serving and loving your children and families.

Melissa loves teaching! She loves seeing kids’ faces light up when they discover or accomplish new things.  She loves hearing children’s voices join together in praise to Jesus.  She loves the opportunity to help build a classroom culture that recognizes their need for Jesus and seeks to be a place that is an expression of His love as everyone loves and cares for one another and learn and grow together.  She is looking forward to this adventure with you!

Deut. 31:8  For the Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;  he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.
